The Hargrave Family Tree

"Some letters from the 1840's and 1850's written by the English Master at Madras College, Mr Andrew Young, were recently discovered in the National Archives of Scotland. Remarkably they contained pages from the jotters of a young student, Joseph Hargrave, who was attending Madras College at that time and boarding with Mr Young and his family. Young Joseph's mother Letitia Hargrave at that time lived at York Factory (Manitoba's oldest settlement in Western Canada) where his father James Hargrave was an important fur-trader. Some of his mother's correspondence may be read at the Early Canadiana On-line Site. It makes fascinating reading. This archive even contains a Photograph of Joseph Hargrave taken when he was attending Madras College around 1850."
